Poor Pluto. Long considered the ninth and outermost planet of our system, Pluto has faced an astronomical onslaught from critics who claim it is not a planet after all. Others maintain that it is. Using different definitions, both sides are still warring over whether Pluto is our ninth planet, or just another of the dwarf planets in an area called the Kuiper belt. Pluto is named for the Roman god of the underworld, counterpart to the Greek god Hades. The music is said to be from Gustav Holst’s seven-movement orchestral suite, The Planets Op. 32. But Holst died before Pluto was discovered, so this particular movement, called “Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld,” was written later by another composer.

I would imagine so. I mean, the craft will be making a flyby? only about 100 miles above the surface of the planet, I don’t think they would wait so many years for such a close flyby and not snap a picture or two. Just think. If you got that close to Pluto, wouldn’t you take atleast one picture?

  • JonathanJanzen Says:

I can’t? wait either! When is that, 2015?

  • JonathanJanzen Says:

Actually, its size, along with its mass, had alot? to do with it. Yes, many other reasons were that its orbit was weird (elliptical, and a an 18 degree tilt, if I remember correctly), and the fact that they had found many other similar objects in the area (the Kuiper belt), a few of which are bigger than Pluto. Also, Charon, Pluto’s biggest moon, is so big compared to Pluto, that its tidal pull actually moves the entire planet of Pluto. Those are the main reasons it was demoted.

  • JonathanJanzen Says:

Pluto is NOT getting smaller. Neither is it moving away. They just? decided that Pluto was too small to ever have been a planet in the first place, so they demoted it.
