Discovered because of a mistake, Pluto was a planet that turned out not to be a planet at all, thanks to a still-disputed decision made in 2006. Join us for an engrossing tale of the ups and downs of Pluto, its strange appeal, the reasons behind its demotion, and the reasons why it should be set back in the planetary pantheon. Scientists have deflected inquiries about the discovery of new planet for a few years now, mainly because they feared being associated with these “fringe” theories. But, according to a team of Spanish astronomers who call themselves StarViewer Team they found a brown dwarf star with large satellites encircling it. It’s twice the size of Jupiter The group made the rounds of all the news web sites in the past two weeks, claiming they discovered something very significant. It’s almost twice the size of Jupiter and just beyond our furthest planetoid, Pluto. Although it’s not a planet, it appears to have planets or large satellites encircling it. It’s what astronomers call a “brown dwarf star” and its official name is “G1.9?. What’s a Brown Dwarf Star? All matter attracts other matter. A larger mass will attract smaller masses towards it. In space this results in growing clouds of matter that tend to clump together and attract more matter. Since most of the matter in space is gaseous, these clouds eventually get so dense that they collapse into dense gaseous spheres. When they do this there is usually some “left over” matter that forms a ring around the sphere. If there is enough matter in a sphere of hydrogen, for example, it can cause so much compression at the shpere’s core that the hydrogen atoms begin to fuse together and a fusion-reaction ignites a new born star. In this reaction two hydrogen atoms join together to form one helium atom and release extra energy as …

Science & Reason on Facebook: tinyurl.com Hubble’s Universe Unfiltered 15: Changing Views of Pluto While it may seem that the astronomy community’s views on Pluto changed radically with its reclassification in 2006, the truth is that our understanding of Pluto has always been shifting. This small, icy world in the distant reaches of the solar system is so difficult to observe that, even with Hubble’s keen resolution, it only shows up as a few pixels in an image. Only with patience, lots of observations, and huge amounts of computing power have we been able to create approximate surface maps of Pluto and discover some surprising alterations to its surface. Improved imagery yields improved insight. We now comprehend Pluto’s place within the solar system, and the exploration of that region has really just begun. Hubble’s Universe Unfiltered is a collection of video podcasts. Each episode offers an in-depth explanation of the latest news story or image from the Hubble Space Telescope, presented by astronomer Frank Summers. — Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com — NOTES * In the video podcast, I jokingly refer to “Percival Lowell’s Greatest Mistakes” being 1.) the claim that Mars had a civilization using canals, and 2.) the prediction of a large planet beyond Neptune. Some may recognize this phrasing as an oblique reference to similar wording used in Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker series. (If you’re going …
