As bad as it is, I’m not particularly bothered by the stereotypical black voice/dialogue of the genie. I can understand that this was made back in 1940, when people’s opinions on different race were very different (in a bad way).
The biggest problem I had with this short was…in the words of The Nostalgia Critic:
“You actually went with the lowest common denominator and made it all a dream?! You ass of shit!”
October 27th, 2009 at 3:58 am
Uh, Mickeys black. So what’s the problem?
October 27th, 2009 at 3:58 am
Rascist in a lot of ways, but I think it’s an interesting look on race relations at the time. I mean, this was 1940. The fact that most can watch this now and KNOW that it’s racist is a pretty good sign of our own times, as far as I’m concerned.
Besides all that… I loved it! So cute! My dog hats baths as much as poor Pluto, XD

Yes. Yes, it did.

Isn’t that cute. Apparently the magic lamp is an old black man? ….but that awesome music playing in the background is old black men too. 🙂 …..couldn’t sit through all 7 minutes, but it brings me back to when Disney cartoons used to be on TV. …Yeay more!

Did Rochester himself voice the genie as some sources say?
October 27th, 2009 at 3:58 am

They film it in technicolor at the Disney studios, they own cameras that were installed with technicolor.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:58 am
Were these cartoons filmed in color in the 40’s? Or did that come later with Technicolor? I apologize for my film illiteracy.

This is great! Hard to believe Clyde Geronimi directs.
